The Sacred Art of Sage Smudging
The ritual of smudging with sage
Smudging is the ancient ritual of using the smoke from sacred herbs and plants to cleanse and clear energy fields and spaces in order to create spiritual balance and harmony on all levels. If you’re feeling stuck, negative, or just overall low energy, one of the best ways to raise your vibration is through smudging with Sage.
In today’s expeditious world, where stress seems to lurk around every corner, more people are turning to alternative methods to gain a better sense of peace and balance in their lives. Meditating and quieting your mind while burning white sage in ritual or ceremony is one of the most sacred ways to tune into Mother Earth and her Magic. These peaceful moments balance your mind, body, and Soul and return s you to Self.
Native American Ceremonies & Shamanic Healing Practices
From Native ceremonies to the incense burned in temples and churches, smoke has always been a vehicle of prayer, purification, and connection to the Divine. The ritual of smudging spans many cultures and religions both in the US an abroad. For thousands of years, cultures around the world have used sacred smoke to bridge the human and spiritual realms.
Native Shamanic elders teach that when we burn sage, its smoke clears away negativity, restores harmony, and helps us reconnect with Spirit. The rising smoke acts as a conduit between the physical and spiritual planes, carrying our prayers and intentions to the Great Spirit.
When we smudge with sage, we are participating in an ancient continuum of reverence — joining countless generations who have turned to the sacred power of smoke for healing, balance, and communion with the unseen.
Smudging, Spiritually speaking, can be similar to lighting a candle in church or holding a rosary while saying a prayer. Rituals of any kind that are infused with intention can cleanse and clear personal energy and space to in order for you to develop deeper spiritual connections with your Self, and with your Higher Power.
You may have already incorporated smudging into your personal or spiritual routines, however understanding its origins, proper use, and sacred purposes allows for a deeper level of respect and Spiritual connection while smudging with sage or any other sacred herb.
What Other Herbs Can You Smudge with?

Common herbs and plants used for Smudging rituals
While most of us are familiar with the classic white sage, there’s a whole world of smudging herbs out there, each with its own unique energy and purpose.
Below are some of the most powerful and aromatic smudging herbs that can elevate your spiritual practice.
The burning of dried herbs is a well-known spiritual cleansing ritual used frequently in Native American purification ceremonies. In some cultures, smudging is used to drive away negative energy and cleanse personal spaces.
Each plant medicine comes with its own specific healing abilities and can be used in a variety of ways. White Sage is the most common herb used for cleansing the energy field of a person, place, or thing. Smudging with sage can cleanse negative energy and purify your living, traveling, and working spaces including your home, office and car.
In Native American and Shamanic healing traditions, three primary herbs are used for smudging: sage, cedar, and sweetgrass—each carrying its own unique healing and cleansing properties and intentions, similar to healing crystals.
- White Sage is burned to dispel negative or stagnant energy, and unseen negative energies or entities.
- Cedar is used to invite blessings and purification, especially in spaces touched by illness.
- Sweetgrass draws in positive, healing energy and invites harmony after clearing.
- Rocky Mountain Juniper helps with healing emotional wounds, improving focus, and attracting positive influences.
- Eucalyptus can cleanse spaces of negative energy, encourage health, and promote feelings of clarity and protection.
- Lavender is known for its calming and purifying properties which strengthens peace-of-mind and removes energy blockages.
Of significance is that very early on in my Shamanic Healing initiation practices I was taught the importance of burning only one herb at a time, as each carries its own intention, message, and vibration. Blending them can send mixed signals energetically out into the Universe causing misconstrued Intentions.

What does sage smudging do?
Smudging isn’t just about filling a space with smoke. The benefits of smudging go much deeper Spiritually and evokes a shift in heart energy and mindset. The space it creates promotes the mental pause and emotional reflection necessary to invite gratitude and deeper spiritual connections into your life and personal spaces.
Developing a healing ritual of daily smudging for yourself is very sacred and can change your life forever. Incorporating smudging with sage into your daily routine will shift your energy tremendously.
White sage is the most common and popular herb for smudging and the best sage for cleansing negative energy. White sage is also widely used for its healing properties to drive out negative energy and evil spirits.
Smudging with sage for healing
When I burn sage to clear my spaces, I consider this a cleansing ritual. When I burn to clear out the negativity from my physical, mental or emotional being, I consider it smudging for healing purposes.
Antimicrobial properties are one of the chief health benefit associated with smudging. White sage (Salvia apianahas) smoke cleansing has been used throughout history to treat many different type of bacterial illnesses and infections. The antimicrobial properties of the herbs typically used in smudging rituals are also thought to guard against airborne bacteria and unseen energies.
Preparing to Smudge yourself, your office or your home
If you’re thinking of trying out smudging at home, here are some tips to help you prepare.
Gather Smudging Supplies
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A smudge stick or a tightly tied bundle of Sage or other herbs. The most common herbs you’ll find are White Sage (cleansing & clearing negative energy), Cedar (blessings), Yerba Santa (emotional release), Lavender (calming and purifying), and Palo Santo (stress, anxiety and pain). Smudge sticks can be found at craft stores, grocery stores, local metaphysical shops, and online. Different types of smudging sticks that can also be useful are: Dragon’s Blood (power cleansing), Black Sage (grounding), Rosemary (mental clarity), Eucalyptus (respiratory wellness) , Shasta Sage (rare purification), Copal (spiritual connection), Juniper (protection), Blue Sage (stress relief), Royal Sage (vitality), and Pine (renewal).
- A candle, lighter, or some source of fire.
- A shell or bowl to snuff out the flame. Abalone shells are most commonly used, but you can choose any fire-resistant bowl you like.
- A smudging wand or feather. One of my favorite Smudging Feather Wands that can be custom designed with different crystal options can be found on Etsy and has a healing vibe. Smudging wands are used as fans, helping to dissipate the smoke and direct it to specific areas of your space. You can purchase them, or make your own. Smudging kits are also available.
How to Smudge your living space, another person, or an object

A traditional smudging prayer to release negative energy and invite healing light.
Set Your Intention & Smudging Prayer
Spend a few minutes in meditation, silence, or say this smudging prayer prior to beginning your smudging ritual. Before lighting your smudge stick, set an intention for what you hope to achieve.
The steps below apply whether you’re smudging yourself, smoke cleansing your home, or an object. You can smudge any of these as often as you’d like.
Smudge your body
Light the end of a sage bundle with a match. Blow out quickly if it catches on fire. The tips of the leaves should smolder slowly, releasing thick smoke. Direct this smoke around your body and space with one hand while holding the bundle in the other. Allow the incense to linger on the areas of your body or surroundings you’d like to focus on. Using a fan or feather can also help direct the smoke, though this is optional. Allow the ash to collect in a ceramic bowl or shell.
Smudge your home or living space
In this instance, direct sage smoke over all surfaces and spaces in your home or living area. Be thorough. I recommend working in a clockwise direction around your home, ending back where you started, especially for spiritual purposes. Others recommend counterclockwise. Do what feels best for your situation and follow your intuition.
Smudge an object
Direct smoke around and over the object of your choice. This can be done to a new item, such as jewelry, furniture, or clothing, to protect or dispel it of negative energy. Items related to negative experiences or memories must also be smudged.
What to do after smudging with Sage
Make sure your smudge stick is completely extinguished. You can do this by dabbing the lit end into a small bowl of ash or sand. Check the end closely to make sure there are no more embers burning. Once it’s completely put out, store it in a safe, dry place out of the sun.
🌬 When Does Smudging with Sage Help?
Smudging with sage is more than an energetic cleanse — it’s a reset for the spirit, a purification for the mind, and a way to realign your space with peace and intention with a smudging prayer.
Here are the moments when smudging with sage can make the most positive energetic impact:
🌀 After an Argument
Words are vibrations, and once spoken, they linger. Even after an apology or resolution, the relationship can hold traces of anger, hurt, or misunderstanding. Burning sage after conflict helps neutralize those emotional remnants. The rising smoke symbolically lifts away tension, restoring calm and harmony to the room. Open a window or door as you smudge, allowing that stale energy to leave and peace to flow back in.
🌿 When Someone in Your Home Is Unwell
Illness doesn’t just affect the body — it impacts the emotional and energetic environment too. Spaces can absorb heaviness, fatigue, and worry. Smudging gently supports the healing process by lightening that density. Move the sage slowly around the room, with loving intention, visualizing light returning to every corner. This doesn’t replace medical care, but it complements it beautifully by refreshing the emotional atmosphere for recovery.
🚪 After Visitors Leave
Every person carries their own frequency. Some guests bring warmth and laughter; others may unknowingly leave behind energetic residue that feels off once they’re gone. Burn sage through your entryway, living area, and wherever your guest spent time. As the smoke curls, imagine reclaiming your home’s energy — your sanctuary — and reestablishing your unique vibration.
🛍 When You Bring in Secondhand or Vintage Items
Objects can hold memories — and emotions — from previous owners. Garage Sales, Thrift Stores, Estate Sales ect. Whether it’s a piece of furniture, jewelry, or a thrifted treasure, each carries energetic history. Smudging these items helps clear their past associations and infuses them with your own intention and light. It’s like spiritually “resetting” them so they fully belong in your space.
😣 When Your Energy Feels Off
You don’t need a specific reason to smudge. Sometimes, you simply feel that your energy is is heavy or out of balance. If your home feels emotionally cluttered, stale, or restless, trust that intuition. Light your sage, breathe deeply, and let the smoke move intuitively to where it’s needed. You’ll often sense an immediate shift — clarity, lightness, calm.
💧 When You’re Feeling Down, Dark or Depressed
Sage isn’t a cure for inner pain or depression, but it can be an ally. The ritual of smudging — the scent, the motion, the moment of intention — engages the senses and can lift the spirit. As you burn sage, affirm something kind to yourself: “I release heaviness. I welcome light.” This act alone can remind your heart of its resilience and your soul of its strength.
💔 When You are Grieving a Loss
Grief transforms everything — the air, the energy, even time itself. Whether you’ve lost a loved one, a relationship, a job, or a dream, the energy of grief can settle heavily around you. Smudging provides a sacred pause, a gentle way to honor what has ended while making space for peace to return. As the smoke rises, visualize releasing pain with gratitude and love.
🌕 During a Full Moon
The full moon amplifies whatever energy is already present — both the light and the heavy. It’s a natural time for reflection, cleansing, and release. Smudging under the full moon (or near a window where the moonlight shines) aligns your space and spirit with this powerful cycle. As you do, invite release, renewal, and clarity.
😵💫 When Stress & Anxiety Infiltrate Your Emotions
Sage won’t eliminate anxiety and stress , but the act of smudging can bring grounding relief. The ritual of lighting sage, slowing your breath, and watching the smoke rise offers mindfulness and focus. It draws you out of your mind and back into your body — reminding you that peace, harmony, and joy all exist in the present moment.
🌙 After a Nightmare or Night Terror Dream
Dreams are energetic events, and nightmares can leave emotional trauma long after waking. If you wake from a disturbing dream, smudge your bedroom gently. Focus on the bed area, corners, and any shadows that feel unsettled. As you cleanse, imagine the smoke absorbing fear, transmuting it into peace. You’re reclaiming your sacred space for rest and protection.
The Spirit of Smudging Smoke and Renewal
Smudging with sage is far more than a ritual — it’s a bridge between the seen and unseen, a sacred act of release and rebirth. Smudging is a deeply personal practice, and the best way to find your perfect smudging herb is to trust your intuition.
Whether you’re drawn to the protective energy of cedar, the healing properties of rosemary, or the balancing power of chakra sage, each herb offers its own unique gifts. As you explore these different smudging herbs, you may find that your favorites change with the seasons, your mood, or your spiritual needs.
The key to a successful smudging practice is intention. As you light your herbs, take a moment to focus on what you want to achieve—whether it’s clearing negative energy, inviting peace, or manifesting abundance.
With each waft of smoke, you’re not just purifying your space; you’re also connecting with ancient traditions and bringing a little bit of magic into your daily life. So, gather your herbs, set your intentions, and let the smoke work its magic.
When you allow the smoke to rise, you’re not only clearing stagnant energy but also sending a message of intention to the universe. Each wisp of sage carries your prayers, gratitude, and desire for harmony.
Whether you use it to cleanse your home, your aura, or your heart, smudging reconnects you to the sacred rhythm of life — reminding you that peace, clarity, and balance are not found outside of you, but rekindled within.
